Volvo Trucks improves driveability and efficiency for its city trucks

The Volvo FL and FE, which are most often used for distribution in cities and urban areas, have received new, updated gearboxes that offer improved efficiency and smoother driving.

To enhance and optimize the driving, both the Volvo FL and FE have received different drive modes: economy, performance and off-road.

The Volvo FL is a small and agile member of Volvo Trucks’ range, and with its brand new 8-speed fully automatic gearbox (two higher than the earlier model) it offers fuel savings of up to 4%.

“With the new gearbox we also offer full PTO (power take out) capability when standing still, making it more versatile and perfect for dump trucks, salt spreaders, snow plowers and many other similar operations,” says Kenneth Ackerberg, Product Manager for the Volvo FL and FE.

Meanwhile, the larger Volvo FE now has the same updated I-Shift gearbox used in Volvo Trucks’ heavier models, making gear shifts up to 30% faster.

A significant improvement in driveability is achieved through the new way the I-Shift gearbox interacts with the engine. The update includes faster clutch activation that results in a shorter torque interruption. It also makes gear shifting smoother, for a more harmonious driving experience.

“Faster gear shifting makes it possible to optimize the gear selection more efficiently. Driving in cities with many starts and stops leads to many gear shifts so the improvements will be very noticeable and appreciated by the driver,” continues Kenneth Ackerberg.

Three different drive modes for optimizing driving

To enhance and optimize the driving of both the Volvo FL and FE, there are three different drive modes: economy, performance and off-road. Each mode is selected by pushing a button on the dashboard, which is then presented on the instrument cluster.

“To make it as easy as possible to save fuel, the truck always starts in eco-mode, offering eco-roll at pedal driving. However, the performance mode is easily accessible by a simple click. We have also added an off-road mode as these trucks can also be used for light construction assignments,” concludes Kenneth Ackerberg.

The off-road mode offers improved low speed performance to make the driving safer, offering better control and a less stressful experience on bad roads.
